The IBM 7318 Serial Communications Network Server provides the IBM RS/6000* family of systems a LAN attached async connectivity solution with high performance, increased connectivity, high data rates, long device cabling distances, and multihost connectivity to IBM and Non-IBM systems. Now with the IBM 7318 and the Network Terminal Accelerator Features, the RS/6000 can support up to 2048 ports per slot, output data rates up to 115.2 Kbps, and serial cabling distance of up to 2300 ft. Also with the 7318, ports can be connected to multiple RS/6000 processors, other IBM and non-IBM systems simultaneously. In addition, the 7318 provides two parallel ports and an alternate network interface for high availability.

The IBM 7318 Model P10 provides serial and parallel ports for one or more RS/6000 systems using standard Ethernet LAN wiring and popular Ethernet protocols. The Model P10 serial ports support an output data rate of up to 115.2 Kbits per second (Kbps) and the parallel ports support a data rate of up to 250 KBps. Both are configured like native serial and parallel ports on the RS/6000. With this and other unique features the Model P10 makes the Ethernet Network transparent to users and their applications.

* Provides the user all the connectivity advantages of a network attached device, including attachment to multiple RS/6000 systems, with all the dynamic configurability and functionality of a native serial and parallel port.

* Utilizes no Micro Channel slots on RS/6000 systems with integrated Ethernet.

* Provides high performance serial and parallel port connectivity.

* Adapters improve RS/6000 system performance by off-loading networking protocol overhead from the system's CPU, resulting in an increase in the number of supportable users or in faster applications processing.

o Serial ports support DCD, DTR, TX, RX, CTS, RTS in normal mode and additional RS-232D signals in "Buddy" mode.
o All serial ports are RS-423 and RS-232D compatible, eight of which also support attachment of RS422 devices.
o Serial ports have RJ45 8-pin connectors.
o Up to seven simultaneous sessions per serial port and transparent print
o Parallel ports are PC Compatible using DB-25 connectors
o One DB-15 AUI Ethernet Connection
o 10Base-T Ethernet connection
o One active Ethernet interface and one standby for high availability
o Up to four servers may be connected together to share one Ethernet connection
o Attaches to other Ethernet interfaces in addition to the Network Terminal Accelerator features.
o Optional features for wall or rack mounting and cabling to PCs, Macintosh computers, or terminals using Modified Modular Jack (MMJ) connectors.
o Rack mounting uses one standard EIA unit
o Integrated power supply, 50-60 Hz 100-240 VAC
o Software loads over Ethernet from a system
o Local and remote executable diagnostic aids.
